The Virtual Grammar Lab (VGL) is an extensive database of links to free online English grammar activities on the Internet. You can use the VGL to search for grammar practice exercises or explanations to help you learn English. You can search for activities by the grammar point you want to study, by the difficulty level, or by the type of activity. The Virtual Grammar Lab was designed for ESL/EFL students but also has many activities that will help students in English writing classes practice their grammar.
English language learners and English teachers can sign up for free Virtual Grammar Lab accounts. Signing up is completely optional; it's not necessary to sign up or log in to use the VGL. For students, the VGL will track when they logged in, the activities they viewed and the grammar points they studied. Teachers can create classes for their students to join and then track the VGL use and grammar studied by their students.
The Virtual Grammar Lab is based on Web 2.0 principles: through the combined efforts of the community, we can build a resource that is more useful for everyone. Students can rate the activities they study to help guide future learners to the best pages. Students can also flag links that are broken or other problems with the activities for the Spunky English team to investigate. Teachers can also rate activities and flag problems, but more importantly, they can add additional activities to the VGL database. If you enjoy using the VGL, please consider contributing your efforts to the project in these ways.
The Virtual Grammar Lab was created by Daryl L. Beres with the support of a Century College Presidential Innovation Grant. Many thanks to all of the ESOL instructors and students at Century who have helped with the ongoing development of this site.
